Hey I have a great idea!

Lets all make blankets statements as coaches and completely paint ourselves into a corner, then when we have been in the corner for a long time and our blankets no longer do what they were designed to do we  say. “hey you know what, I am going to do this  because ‘new’ science says this…”

Well let me tell you something fuckwits when it comes to training there isn’t a lot of  new research…What made Pat Casey strong will more than likely make you strong as well.  Where the science finds its self progressing is in our understanding of nutrition and supplementation and restoration…and even then we seem to only be validating what others have known for a very long time…either being Ayurvedic  or Chinese medicine.

I often find myself wondering what that answers are to some of the questions that I get asked…Even feeling stumped by the complexity of the wording that is used to present the idea, then I realize. The question is not complex at all but rather the information is so convoluted that ultimate goal of the question is lost in translation. This distraction is a result of coaches working to be the light in the darkness.  To separate themselves from the masses of fellow professionals, but in doing so they are changing the rules and manipulating the reality. Taking one aspect of life, of moving, of health and either making it the pinnacle or bastardize it  to the unknowing for the sake of their own selfish success.

strengthTodays fitness industry is overflowing with coaches that will burn fast and fade away not because they are poor motivators or uneducated but because of their own need to isolate themselves atop of the mountain  and in doing so they have turned their coaching ability into a 90 sec sound bite. Creating distinction from all others, promoting away from holistic towards very specific and cutting themselves off from the source in the process. If you say never squat, what happens when it comes time to squat? If you promote only Ring  training on suspension what happens when you have mastered the most complex movements or you receive an  athlete that this is not applicable to? If you only do interval weight training or daily periodization (it changes every 24hrs  or W.O.D)  what happens if you are given the opportunity to work with a powerlifter over the course of a year? Or what if you are working with powerlifters but you get the opportunity to work with athletes that need to wield their own body against gravity?

Mg2uGreat coaches are not made in their ability to promote an idea in 60 seconds, great coaches are created in their ability to produce successful people in a multitude of disciplines. Standing on a soap box is only good when you are not pointing at the faults of the people who are looking too you for guidance, and if you paint yourself into a corner by only identifying the faults of other systems you will eventually be forced out of the corner as a need for survival and then you will be painted as a hypocrite…

  1. What’s more – some coaches or athletes instinctively come up with the same WORKING ideas as other successful coaches and athletes DO without ever communicating with each other directly or indirectly.
    Morons who only acknowledge what’s in “peer reviewed meta-analyzed double blind studies” and condemn the rest of coaching practical knowledge, are usually people who never made anybody strong+fit+lean, including their own bloody selves.

  3. Derek I took your Level 1 in Irvine in 2011 at Stark’s. I injured my right bicep if you remember. I was VERY fortunate to train with Roger Estep, George Frenn, Terry McCormick, John Santos, Tony Hardridge , Ron Fernando and others at various gyms in Southern California from the early 80’s until mid 90’s. The picture of Roger always brings back great memories of training with him. He squatted 835 at Randy’s Gym on main st in Huntington Beach in the mid 80’s. He weighed around 207. That is a quadruple bodyweight lift! I’m sure I will never be that close to experiencing that again. Great article. Keep ranting!!!
